Architizer A+Awards 2017
For the third year in a row, the Cut Evolution won at the Architizer A+Awards, this time for 2017. Our kitchen won in its category, having garnered both the jury prize as well as winning the popular choice. It was chosen from among designs from more than 100 countries around the world. The Cut’s Italian-made design convinced the jury, made up of key players from the worlds of design, architecture, technology and industry press, and won the popular vote thanks to the concept behind The Cut Evolution. “Everything I create has a functional reason as well as aesthetic understanding. Last night in New York we retired the NA+Awards 2017 prize with the The Cut project.

This year, the focus was on EGO, the most recent development from the Cut project.
The Cut is the result of research meant to go beyond the present. A project and a series of ideas dedicated to design and innovative content. A continuous comparing of notes with the most international, universal trends. To interpret them with new forms and new functions in its deepest identity, in the DNA of the Cut, there’s an approach that is naturally different in defining furnishings for the kitchen environment.
Meant to evolve and constantly develop technical ideas and solutions and new technologies.

AND THE WINNER IS...
A huge accolade for the superb quality of the project and for a kitchen which is truly at the cutting edge of design. For the second year in a row, the Cut Evolution has won the prestigious Architzer A+Awards.

AND THE WINNER IS...
When it was launched in 2015, the Cut won the ARCHITIZER A+AWARD in the ‘kitchens’ category (with the model illustrated here). ARCHITIZER A+AWARDS is the most important international contest, and promotes excellence in architecture and the finest products. Its mission is to enhance the way in which design and architecture can contribute to improving life in the home.
AND THE WINNER IS...
Architect Alessandro Isola, with his the Cut kitchen, won the coveted Golden A’ Design Award for 2014-2015. The A’ Design Award is not simply a prize, but a confirmation of superior quality and design which is recognized by manufacturers, designers and design-oriented groups world-wide. Winning the A’ is confirmation of true excellence for designers, and of superior quality for manufacturers.
Your guess is as good as ours! During the Milan prototype launch April 2014, a guy pops into the Record Cucine showroom and asks if he can sketch theCut. Alessandro happens to be present and the two are introduced. Minutes later the guy presents Ale with his minimalist impression of the kitchen. Attached on a ‘post-it,’ is also a profile portrait of Ale, skilfully drawn in 2 pen strokes. Intrigued Ale Googles the guy. Turns out he’s a successful named artist! Ale puts the chance meeting to the back of his mind during a busy launch week. Post launch week, try as he might to recall – the name’s gone. So has the Google search history. Giuiliano Veronelli, the Cut project’s Chief Engineer, assures prototype installation team at Record Cucine’s Milan showroom, that the rest of the kitchen is nowhere near as heavy. Minutes later the 2 main Island blocks arrived!

NO FRIENDS IN BUSINESS?
Not true says Fabio Setten. ‘Ale and I are friends first, commercial collaborators second. That’s the rule. From this relationship order comes a trust and honesty that enables free-thinking and inventiveness’.
ONCE IN A BLUE MOON
It’s not very often that a design genre is flipped on its head. Not just tweaked and fiddled with a bit to meet a new style or trend criteria. We mean completely re-imagined. Re-interpreted. Re-invigorated! TheCut kitchen concepts re-configurable nature, we think raises the kitchen design bar. And by more than a couple of rungs! It’s not just another way to stack units, or re-position an island. It’s another way of thinking about one of the most important spaces in the modern home. TheCut is available in an L shape, or Island configuration, but the concept doesn’t stop there. The ‘Future Thinking’ page of this site presents tomorrows ‘shape-shifting’ possibilities being worked on today. Have a browse and imagine.
TheCut’s signature, sensor operated, vertical ceiling drawer’s, glide between a sleek framework of metal profiles. Consecutive frames are left bare, those that remain house the vertical drawers. The appearance is of a solid object exposing it’s symmetrical skeletal core.
With theCut, its designer Alessandro Isola, demonstrates his love of material contrast. The blocks with smooth veneered white sides, and worktop surface’s in either cool high- grade quartz, or Italian Bianco Lasa Marble, create a beautifully tactile exchange between the warmth of the tables organic, natural or dark sandblasted oak. Look into the tables deep retaining recess and its supportive block reveals its black lacquered core.
COMPARTMENTS, NOT APARTMENTS!
So cavernous are theCut’s drawer compartments a passing carpentry expert (hence check shirt and dungarees) considers taking up residence in the kitchens elevated ‘upper’ block! TheCut’s ‘upper’ block offers 6 full depth and 6 half depth drawers, as well as typically housing sink, cooker and hob. The ‘ground floor’ block (seen behind carpentry expert) offers a further 8 full depth drawers.
The cool concave, perforated object cradling the apples is ‘Dunes Bowl’ by Alessandro Isola. Produced using a 3D printing technique, with laser sintered nylon powder. Dunes Bowl previewed with theCut prototype at Record e Cucine and Milan Design Week, Brera District, both in April 2014. The bowl was also exhibited in Los Angeles at the Dwell on Design conference 2014.

‘Ale, please bring plenty of outfit options to the photoshoot’ requested the Art Director. Ale complied. T-shirts. Black. Jeans. Black. Smart Jackets, Casual Jackets. Black. Trainers. Black. Watch. Black. Oh and the obligatory scarf. Half a dozen, in a beautiful range of fabrics. All six. Black. When asked ‘why so monotone?’ he answers with a gentle smile ‘my life is colourful enough!’

ART OF THE POSSIBLE
Extending theCut concept (no table pun intended) beyond free-standing was always paramount in both Fabio’s (Record e Cucine CEO) and Alessandro’s (theCut designer) minds. Early CAD’s demonstrate wall- mounted future thinking.
Record e Cucine’s flagship store in the Heart of Milan, showcases the company’s latest thinking and is home to theCut prototype. CEO Fabio Setten cites theCut as a concept that has re-set the kitchen design benchmark. But although theCut has put his company at the innovation forefront, he’s not one to rest on his laurels. Already production wheels are in motion to offer choices of configuration and size. Watch this space!
SHOW OF STRENGTH
TheCut’s unique, handmade, polished steel, cantilever spine, supports the kitchens upper block. Metalworking craftsmanship at its finest. A work of art in itself!
A Jedi Knights weapon of choice it’s not. The beautifully simple LED downlight, housed at the base of each of theCut’s ceiling drawer profiles, it is.

A BRIEF BIO
Alessandro Isola, began his formal Art and Interior Architecture training at home in Italy. He then headed to England and the School of Architecture at Oxford Brookes University, where he was awarded the coveted Michael King memorial prize. After completing his training at London’s prestigious Architectural Association, Ale joined Foster+Partners, widely regarded as one of the best architectural and design practices in the world. A series of collaborative projects and awards followed, including designing for Italian glass company Venini and winning the CREA Award for the Flow Light by Vibia. Today Ale heads his own Studio, Alessandro Isola Ltd, based in London’s growing design district by the Tate Modern.

US! endorses the kitchens sleek oblong appearance and hints at it’s horizontal and vertical movement.
DIFFERENT POINT OF VIEW
The thing that irritates me about Kitchens is, that once they are installed, that’s it. It’s hard to change anything. In your living room you can just spin a settee, move a rug, hang a new picture and the room feels different. So I wanted to create a kitchen that allowed change. Rotate theCut’s table one way, and you have to move the chairs and the layout becomes more contained. Pull the table long ways, and you create open space, and the perception of a different overall shape. With the ceiling drawers, close them and the kitchen forms three bold white blocks – one of them on the ceiling! Drop the drawers down, and the gaps they leave let light travel through, and the drawer profiles create ceiling shadows. Also, when they are lowered they add another dimension, which of course you can play with by dropping one, two or three. These things really do make a room that usually you wouldn’t change for years, feel very different in a matter of minutes.
